CROSS COUNTRY SKIING WORLD CUP RACES

SOLDIER HOLLOW OLYMPIC VENUE

The January Field Trip for the Wasatch Camera Club will be to the World Cup Races -- Cross Country --which will be held on January 13th. These races will occur on Jan 10-14th, and will include the world’s best skiers, the same ones who will be here in 2002 for the Winter Games. The difference is there won’t be the large crowds, nor the high costs as in 2002. It’s a great venue. Entry is free. Bring your boots or snowshoes if there’s a lot of snow, and you’ll be able to walk the course and position yourself where the excitement is. Get there early and Wes or Marge will tell you where. Starting times on Saturday January 13th are:

9:30 Men's 15 km Classic; 12:00 Women's 4 x 5 km Relay; 2:00 Junior Qualifier.. (PS: If you can't make it or if you want to go back on Sunday the 14th, race starts are: 9:30 am Women's CC Sprint Qualification; 10:00 Men's CC Sprint Qualification; 1:00 pm Women's and Men's CC Sprint Heats......all of these Sprints will be 1.5km)

There are lots of good photo ops before the races begin, so arrive early. In the USA we’re not used to World Cups and world class cross country races, but these are the NFL and the NBA Playoffs combined in Europe.

It’s a good opportunity to shoot some black and white, do some panning, and try some filters on both color and black and white to bring out the white snow. Bring some fast film, at least ISO 200.

It takes an hour to get there from most places in SLC. Take I-80 up Parley’s Canyon. DO NOT take the exit at Kimball Junction to Park City, but use the next exit at US Highway #40 to Heber City. In the center of Heber, turn right onto State Road #113 to Midway. In the center of Midway, #113 turns left toward Charleston. Just before the RR crossing for the Heber Creeper, there’s a sign to Soldier Hollow to the right. Turn there and you’ll see it on the hillside. Follow the signs to the parking lot and then walk about a quarter mile. Coming from Utah County, go up Provo Canyon and turn left onto #113 just after you get past Deer Creek Reservoir.

Questions? Bring them to the Meeting on January 11th.
